The short answer

What is a beard transplant?

A beard transplant is an FUE procedure that moves individual follicles into thin or patchy areas of the beard, cheeks, goatee or mustache. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) describes the back and sides of the scalp as the main donor area, with hair from under the jawline as a second option when fewer grafts are needed.

Peak offers beard and mustache restoration at our Midtown Manhattan clinic, with a free consultation first.

Is it right for you?

Who a beard transplant can help

Patchy growth

Gaps or low density on the cheeks, chin or jawline that have been there since your beard came in.

Mustache and goatee

A fuller mustache or goatee, or a connection between the two.

Scars

The ISHRS lists scars from acne, burns, injuries, cleft lip repair and other surgery as reasons patients seek facial hair transplants.

Shape and definition

A cleaner cheek line or neckline designed around your face.

How it works

Your beard transplant step by step

  1. Design. Your clinician maps the beard shape with you and agrees the areas to fill.
  2. Extraction. Follicles are taken one by one from the donor area, usually the back of the scalp.
  3. Placement. Each graft is placed at the angle and direction of natural facial hair, which usually grows at a very flat angle to the skin.
  4. Recovery. Small crusts form around the grafts in the first days. You follow the aftercare plan your clinician gives you.
  5. Growth. Transplanted hairs commonly shed in the first weeks, then regrow over the following months.
Worth knowing

Donor hair is limited

The ISHRS notes that donor hair is an unrenewable resource. If you may also want a scalp transplant in the future, your clinician should plan both together.

For darker skin, the ISHRS advises taking any beard donor grafts from under the jawline rather than the face, because extraction marks can leave lighter spots.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a beard transplant?

A beard transplant moves individual hair follicles, usually from the back and sides of the scalp, into areas of the beard or mustache that are patchy or sparse. The ISHRS describes the safe scalp area as the main donor area.

Who is a good candidate for a beard transplant?

People with patchy or low-density facial hair, gaps in the beard or mustache, or scars from acne, burns, injuries or surgery may be candidates, according to the ISHRS. A clinician examines your face and donor area to confirm.

Is the transplanted beard hair permanent?

Transplanted follicles usually come from scalp areas that are resistant to balding, so they tend to keep growing. A clinician will explain what to expect for your own hair.

How long until I see results?

Transplanted hairs commonly shed in the first weeks, then regrow over the following months. Your clinician will give you a timeline for your case.

Can I shave after a beard transplant?

Your clinician will tell you when it is safe to trim and shave. Once grown in, the transplanted hair can usually be trimmed and shaped like the rest of your beard.

How much does a beard transplant cost in NYC?

The price depends mainly on the number of grafts. Peak gives you a written quote after a free consultation, and financing through Cherry starts at $149/month. See our NYC cost guide.
